Eden Scot Schaeffer

Eden Scot Shaeffer of Avoca, Iowa passed away March 30, 2023.  She was born January 17, 2003, in Amarillo, Texas to Aaron and Cynthia Shaeffer.Eden was simply an ethereal being. Her smile was 1000 watts, lighting up everyone who saw it. She loved to laugh, she laughed loud and made others laugh until they cried. She loved with her whole face. Eden was love.She brought the sunshine with her everywhere she went. She was unforgettable.

Aftergraduation Ralph worked with hisfather on the farm that has nowbeen in the family for over 125years.On May 15, 1949, Ralph wasunited in marriage to Marjorie AnnMortensen at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa.

Jack Lee McCool

Jack Lee McCool, the son of Larry Steven and Juanita Jane (Theulen) McCool, was born on December 3, 1952, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended school in Tennant, Iowa, through the third grade. When the Tennant school consolidated with the Shelby, Iowa, school, becoming Shelby-Tennant Community School, Jack continued his education in Shelby; he graduated with the Class of 1971.After graduation, Jack entered the United States Army.

Randall Norman Hansen, aka Randy, was born in Harlan, Iowa, on April 15, 1949 to parents, Norman and Hazel. His sister, Dixie, was born three years later. Although he wasn’t thrilled about it, he decided to let her stay.The family lived in Jacksonville, Iowa, and Randy attended Harlan High School, and graduated in 1967. He did a tour of duty in Viet Nam from 1969-1970. (which he called the worst Senior Field Trip ever).

Austa Phelps, 103

Austa Phelps, 103, Moline, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Aspen Nursing Home, Silvis.Private committal will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island.        Austa was born January 30, 1920 in Denmark, the daughter of Roger and Cena Nielsen.  She married Phillip Phelps, Sr. on October 27, 1944 in Omaha, NE.

Allyn Laverne Bartelson, 85

Allyn Laverne Bartelson, age 85, son of Ronald and Cecil (McDowell) Bartelson, was born July 5, 1937, at the Harlan Hospital and died Friday, March 10, 2023, at home on the family farm near Irwin, Iowa. He had been in treatment for multiple types of cancer for several years and was under hospice care the last week.Allyn went to Country School Polk Center No. 5 through the 8th grade. He graduated from Harlan High School in 1955.

Virginia Rose Petersen, 94

Chris Anthony Thraen, 84

Chris Anthony Thraen, 84, of Eldora, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at home. He was born on June 5, 1938 in his parents’ home in Harlan, Iowa. Chris attended Harlan High School and barber school prior to joining the United States Coast Guard. Chris served in the United States Coast Guard from 1956 to 1962. He gave many recruits their arrival haircut. He worked for his uncle Lavern as a barber in Omaha, NE until 1965.
