Norma Adams, 90

    SHENANDOAH, TX -- Norma E. Adams, 90, Shendoah, TX, formerly of Harlan, died September 22 in Shenandoah.    Services will be held Thursday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Harlan.  Family will greet friends from 9-11 a.m.

Verena Coenen, 90

    HARLAN -- Verena Ann Coenen, 90, Harlan, died October 22 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25 at noon at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Woodbine Cemetery at Woodbine.  Visitation was Monday, Oct. 24 from 5-8 p.m. at the church.  A wake service was held Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Betty Juhl, 88

    AVOCA -- Betty L. Juhl, 88, Avoca, died October 22 at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center.    Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Family greeted friends Monday, Oct. 24 from 6-7 p.m.

Birthday Milestones - Richard Wittrup

    HARLAN -- Richard Wittrup of Harlan and Scituate, MA celebrated his 90th birthday on October 9 with 67 friends and relatives from nine states and one foreign country gathering at the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn to help him celebrate.    Wittrup was born on a farm near Marne on October 2, 1926. Following a career in health care management, he retired in 2001.

Important financial aid, college planning night set for Thursday, Oct. 27

    HARLAN – There are new guidelines involving the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Leanne Travis, HCHS Guidance Counselor, said all parents of college-aged students should be aware of the changes.    This year is the first time applicants can use information from their already completed 2015 income taxes for the completion of their FAFSA. This is referred to as PPY (Prior-Prior Year).

Cyclones beat D-S at the wire

 DENISON -- It wasn’t a season-saving win by any means, but for one night, at least, the Harlan Community football team made some thrilling, feel-good memories to take away from a year of hard knocks and disappointment. Trailing Denison-Schleswig 34-7 late in the first half, the Cyclones stormed back with three touchdowns during a three-minute span of the second and third quarters, then scored the game-winning TD and extra point with just :09.

Kaster bags third-place conference medal

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Harlan Community sophomore Greichaly Kaster added to a fantastic 2016 season on Thursday afternoon, placing third among a talented group of girls at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Cross Country Meet. Running the Iowa Western Community College 5K course for the third time this fall, Kaster finished in 19 minutes, 47 seconds, trailing only the Denison-Schleswig tandem of Raegan Andersen (19:16) and Ellie Mendlik (19:36). The HCHS
