THE YEAR IN REVIEW

2016 was an eventful year in Shelby County, Iowa and the nation.  The year saw the election of a new president, Donald Trump, on the national front in a historic battle for office.  At the state level, the community mourned the loss of two police officers in Des Moines gunned down while they sat in their patrol cars.  Locally, we saw changes due to the election, and celebrated sports victories, music accomplishments and a Supermoon!  Here are

ANNIVERSARIES - Peggy and Bill Brue

    HARLAN -- Bill and Peggy Brue of Harlan will mark their 60th wedding anniversary on January 12. They celebrated their anniversary during the Christmas holidays with a family gathering and dinner at their home in Harlan.    The couple’s sons and daughters-in-law are Kurt and Linda Brue, Council Bluffs; and Jay and Mary Brue, Blair, NE. The Brues have three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Birthday Milestones - Inez Klindt

    ATLANTIC -- Inez (McKnabb) Klindt Dreager of Atlantic will celebrate her 80th birthday on Sunday, January 15 at an open house from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.    Her children: Cindy, Diane, Lowell and Patti and their families will host the party.

Birthday Milestones - Lois Zacharias

    PERSIA -- Lois Zacharias of Persia will celebrate her 90th birthday on January 18. Her family is requesting a card shower in her honor. Cards will reach her if sent to 3748 305th St., Persia, IA 51563.      Her family includes Carol and Jerry Plambeck, Persia; Randy and Durelle Zacharias, Persia; and Allan and Diane Zacharias, Omaha.

Edwin Olson, 93

    ATLANTIC -- Edwin Olson, 93, Atlantic, formerly of Harlan, died January 8 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center.    Services are pending at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.    Olson is survived by daughters Carol (Jim) Porter of Louisville, KY and Linda (Jim) Weiss of Tucson, AZ; sons Wayne (Donna) Olson of Kimballton and Allan (Andrea) Olson of Griswold; and sisters Jane Fuller of Minneapolis, MN and Marilyn Meier of Lancaster, CA.

Ruth Ann Corey, 90

    LEMON GROVE, CA -- Ruth Ann Corey, 90, Lemon Grove, CA, formerly of Avoca, died January 1 at Boulder Creek Post Acute Care.    Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 14 at 10:30 a.m.

Brian Boje, 64

    HARLAN -- Brian Douglas Boje, 64, Harlan, died December 17 at North Suburban Hospital.    Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.    Boje is survived by daughter Amber (Jonathan) Groves and son Tyler Boje, all of Thornton, CO; brother Scott (Sheila) Boje of Victoria, TX; and two grandchildren. 

DEDICATED TO SERVING OTHERS

    COUNTY – Mention the Dixie Shanahan case, and Mark Hervey can’t help but express a twinge of sadness about the whole situation.  In his 42 years of law enforcement work, never had he been involved in such an emotionally-charged case that divided the Shelby County community back in 2003-04.    “I honestly felt for Dixie and the abuse she endured over the years,” Hervey said.  “It was an investigation I got personally involved in.”    Shanah

County child health indicators remain positive

    COUNTY – The well-being of Shelby County children continues to be better than average, according to the National Kids Count Initiative sponsored by the Annie E.
