CLARINDA -- Shane Chamberlain led the way with a career-high 28 points and seven rebounds Friday night as the Harlan Community boys basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 79-42 victory at Clarinda. Chamberlain hit 4-of-6 three-pointers and shot 9-of-13 overall, pacing a list of 11 Cyclones in the scoring column in their most lopsided win of the season. Up 28-19 at the half, HCHS outscored the Cardinals 29-10 in the third quarter

Two area residents contacted the Harlan Newspapers on Thurs., Jan. 19 and Friday, Jan. 20 seeing a Bald Eagle feasting on a roadside carcass just west and south of HCHS at Durant and Hwy 59. In both instances staff from the Harlan Newspapers attempted to get to the scene to take a photo, but the Bald Eagle had been scared away.

    WALNUT -- Dixie L. Schirm, 95, Walnut, died Wednesday, Jan. 18 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services are pending at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.

    OAKLAND, NE -- Kristine E. McLaughlin, 71, Oakland, NE, died January 15 at Oakland Mercy Hospital.    Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 20 from 5-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.

    Molly Hernandez and Brett Kimball of Kirkman are the proud parents of this year’s first baby born in 2017 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.  Ethan Vernon Kimball was born at 12:12 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10.  He weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces. 

    HARLAN -- The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry will host its second legislative briefing of the year on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the chamber of commerce offices in Harlan.    The briefing will begin at 10 a.m.  On hand will be Iowa Sen. Jason Schultz (R-Schleswig) and Iowa Rep.

    HARLAN  - The Harlan Newspapers has announced a change in format for the 2017 Home, Garden & Living Show in Harlan, moving to a one-day show with expanded hours.      “After great feedback from our vendors during the past couple of years, we’ve decided to make this change,” said event organizer Mike Kolbe.
