    HARLAN -- Services are pending for John Watts, Jr., 55, Harlan, at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan.    Watts died Wednesday, Jan. 25 in Harlan.  He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and son, Andrew, both of Harlan.

    EARLING -- Kenneth John Kenkel, 57, Earling, formerly of Harlan, died January 22 at the Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling.    Services were held Thursday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the St.

    RURAL SHELBY -- Megan Warner of Albion, NE and Scott Shannon of Irwin exchanged marriage vows at the Willow Creek Glass Chapel in rural Shelby on September 24, 2016. Pastor Lori Shannon of Manning and Pastor Laurie Riley from the Irwin Methodist Church performed the 3 p.m. double ring ceremony.    Parents of the couple are Brad and Lori Warner, Albion; and Rod and Noreen Shannon, Irwin.

Legislative session gets under way

    HARLAN – Approximately 30 local residents turned out Saturday, Jan. 21 for the first legislative briefing of the year in Shelby County at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry offices in Harlan.    On hand were Iowa Rep. Steve Holt (R-Denison) and Iowa Sen.

Myrtue updates CT system, mobile MRI equipment

    HARLAN -- Myrtue Medical Center has recently installed a new CT scanning system.    Updating this equipment improves patient safety by reducing radiation exposure to the patient and provides features for more detailed tracking of total radiation dose.    The new equipment produces high quality images used for diagnosis. The speed of the CT system reduces exam times, improving patient satisfaction.

Schools receive annual Iowa School Report Card

    REGIONAL – The Iowa Department of Education released its Iowa School Report Card this month, with area schools rating from commendable to acceptable on the new system’s scale.    Iowa’s schools are rated on certain educational measures, including math and reading proficiency, college and career ready growth and readiness, how many students are improving academically each year, efforts to close achievement gaps, graduation rates, attendance

Cyclones narrowly miss team title at Mount Ayr Duals

 MOUNT AYR -- Harlan Community came within one match win of an undefeated team championship last weekend, placing second with a 7-1 record at the 2017 Ron Scott Memorial Dual Tournament held Friday and Saturday in Mount Ayr. Lathrop (Missouri) rallied to beat HCHS 35-33 in the first round of the tournament and won the title with an 8-0 mark, also surviving a 39-37 decision vs. Shenandoah on Saturday.
