Lady Vikes bow out at Nodaway Valley, 41-36

 GREENFIELD -- The AHSTW girls battled gamely but came out on the short end of a 41-36 score in Tuesday’s Class 2-A regional quarterfinal game at Nodaway Valley.

Cyclone girls sweep C.B. schools in final regular-season meet

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- The Harlan Community girls bowling team saved its best team score of the season for the final dual meet last Tuesday (February 7), knocking down 2,192 total pins to beat both Lewis Central (1,910) and St. Albert (1,664) at Thunderbowl. HCHS finished with a dual record of 5-6. The Cyclone boys, meanwhile, went 1-1 on the day to finish 8-3 for the season.

Marlene Buthmann, 77

    HARLAN -- Marlene Elsie Buthmann, 77, Harlan, died February 21 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin at 1:30 p.m.  Visitation was held Thursday, Feb. 23 from 3-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-8 p.m.

Elmer Wageman, 92

    HARLAN -- Elmer Wageman, 92, Harlan, died February 3 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance with burial in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery at Defiance.  A wake service will be held Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Visitation is Friday from 5-8 p.m.

ANNIVERSARIES - Bill and Kathie Barrett

    SHELBY -- William and Katherine Barrett of Shelby will mark their 50th wedding anniversary on February 25. They plan to celebrate with their family.    Their family includes Galen and Wendy Barrett, Crescent; Traci Miner and Shannon Bladt, Gilbert, IA; and four grandchildren.

Harlan FFA Chapter celebrates 2017 National FFA Week

    HARLAN -- The Harlan FFA Chapter will celebrate National FFA Week, Feb. 18-25. This year’s theme is Transform and it embraces more than 85 years of FFA traditions while looking forward to the organization’s future. More than half a million members participated in National FFA Week activities at local, state and national levels.

Holt, Schultz said there won’t be employer vengeance

    HARLAN – Local educators’ concerns about their voices going unheard at the bargaining table and a lack of faith in a fair process from those now in firm control of their work-related conditions, were heard by Iowa Sen. Jason Schultz and Iowa Rep. Steve Holt.    But both said they firmly believe there will be no ill intentions from superintendents and school boards.
