Jones ties for 27th at 1-A State Bowling

    DES MOINES – Harlan Community High School junior Keaton Jones placed in a tie for 27th out of 52 total bowlers at the Class 1-A Boys State Bowling Tournament held at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines on Monday.    Jones rolled individual games of 190 and 184 for a total score of 374.    Jones became just the second state qualifier in the history of the Cyclone boys bowling program after rolling a career-best 461 series at the Class 1-A State Quali

    HARLAN -- Leroy Allen Bubke, 74, Harlan, died February 24 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. at Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig.    Bubke is survived by sons Rick (Merry) Hadfield of Beaver Lake, NE, Mike (Paula) Hadfield of Harlan, and George Hadfield of St.

Troy Bomstad, 50

    ROANOKE, VA -- Troy Michael Bomstad, 50, Roanoke, VA, died February 18 at his home.    Services will be held Friday, March 3 at 10:30 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin.  Visitation is Friday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Utilities, city bump up chamber contributions

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Municipal Utilities and the City of Harlan will be increasing their contributions to the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, following actions this past week.    The HMU Board has agreed to increase its industrial development contribution from $25,000 to $40,000 beginning with the HMU fiscal year July 1. Management said the money would come equally from the electric and gas utilities budgets.

Four injured when school bus, wide load vehicle collide in fog

    IRWIN -- Three students and one adult were injured when a school bus and wide load vehicle collided in foggy conditions east of Irwin Tuesday, Feb. 21.    Shelby County Sheriff reports indicate deputies were called out at about 8:15 a.m.

Wingert, Foss earn ‘top five’ state medals

 DES MOINES -- The last time Harlan Community had a top-four medalist at the State Wrestling Tournament, current senior Jacob Wingert was in second grade. Wingert personally ended the drought Saturday with a fourth-place finish at 170 pounds in Class 2-A.
