Special Olympians perform well at state level

 IOWA CITY -- A total of 14 student-athletes from the Harlan Community Schools competed in the Special Olympics Mid-Winter Games on March 10-11 in Iowa City.

Gene Thies, 66

    MINNETONKA, MN -- Gene Elmer Thies, 66, Minnetonka, MN, died January 27 in St. Louis Park, MN.    Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 1 at the Minden Cemetery in Minden.    Thies is survived by sisters Joan Brown of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Gayle (Robert) Prokupek of Avoca.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca is in charge of arrangements. 

Marie Feekes, 87

    AVOCA -- Marie Wineva Feeks, 87, Avoca, died March 24 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan.    Services were held Monday, March 27 at 2 p.m.

Mary Jane Wigness, 73

    OMAHA, NE -- Mary Jane Wigness, 73, Omaha, NE, died February 8 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.    A celebration of life was held Tuesday, Feb. 14 at United Faith Church’s Campus Building in Valley, NE.    She is survived by her brother, C. Robert Wigness; sister-in-law Helene (Ruby) Brezinsky; niece Karola Troidl; and nephew Kris Wigness.    Wigness was born in Harlan. 

Darlene Andersen, 73

    AVOCA -- Darlene Elouise Andersen, 73, Avoca, died March 22 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center.    Services were held Monday, March 27 at 11 a.m.

Marland Mattox, 85

    OMAHA -- Marland Mattox, 85, Omaha, NE, died March 23 at Josie Harper Hospice House.    Services will be held Tuesday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Avoca.  Visitation is Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Museum of Danish America recognized

ELK HORN – In a live Facebook video Wednesday, March 15, staff of the Museum of Danish America announced that the organization has achieved accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the highest national recognition afforded the nation’s museums. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. 

MOCK TRIAL

    HARLAN – Two Harlan Community High School Mock Trial teams have qualified for state competition following top finishes at regional competition in Council Bluffs March 14.    The top three teams from regional competition qualify for state.  The overall regional champion team from HCHS consists of Laura Kaufmann, Ellen Keast, Alexis Irlbeck, Reagan Hansen, Jacob Bartley, Irelynn McMurphy, Anna Nelson and Allyssa Obrecht.  Finishing in third

Batman surprises HCS Elementary student

    HARLAN -- The Iowa League of Heroes’ very own Batman came to the Harlan Community Intermediate School Monday, March 20 to meet local superhero Jaxon Rold. Batman even came in the Bat car!    Rold, 8, a third-grader, currently is undergoing treatment for brain cancer.  Batman is his favorite superhero.  He is the son of Trent Rold and Devin Mahoney.  (Photo contributed)
