Head to the polls Tuesday for school election

REGIONAL – Polls will be open from noon-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12 for the every-other-year school election.    The Harlan Community Schools Board of Education will see the addition of one new face after incumbent Angie Monson of district 4 decided not to run for re-election.    In the absence of Monson, Jessica Anderson has decided to run for district 4.

Solid Waste Agency hosts free Cleanup Crew event

COUNTY -- The Shelby County Area Solid Waste Agency is sponsoring a Free Cleanup Crew Event for residents wishing to dispose of household hazardous waste from their homes.  The event will be held on Saturday, September 16 from 8-11 a.m.

Exira/EH-K $3.9 million bond issue on Tuesday ballot

ELK HORN -- A $3.9 million general obligation school bond will be on the ballot for Sept. 12 in Elk Horn and Exira.    If approved, bond issue proceeds will be used to make repairs and improvements to the Elk Horn and Exira school campuses, originally built in the 1950s.

First-ever Ag Festival provides hands-on learning

COUNTY – The first-ever Shelby County Ag Festival will be held Monday, Sept. 11 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Harlan.    The hands-on learning experience for kids of all ages will include everything from bean dissection, an animal learning center, flowing grain and a commodity carnival to implements, water conservation demonstrations, a GPS scavenger hunt and animal dissection.    The event is free fun for all ages. 

Findlay-Erwin will wed in October ceremony

RURAL SHELBY -- Amanda Findlay and Marcus Erwin both of Harlan plan to marry on October 14 at the Willow Creek Glass Chapel near Shelby.    Parents of the couple are Sara Findlay, Panama, and the late Cole Findlay; and Terry Erwin Sr., Harlan; and Cheryl Erwin, Council Bluffs.

Cyclones sweep Denison in H-10 volleyball opener

 DENISON -- Overcoming a sluggish start in each set, Harlan Community played better volleyball as the night went along to sweep Denison-Schleswig 25-20, 25-15, 25-11 in Tuesday’s Hawkeye Ten Conference opener. Just three days after HCHS won its home tournament and Denison went 0-4 at the AHSTW Tourney, the Monarchs came ready to play on their home floor, leading most of the opening set and going ahead 16-13 to force a Cyclone timeout. HCHS sti

Sporrer, Fischer pace area runners at Lo-Ma Invite

 LOGAN -- The IKM-Manning and AHSTW cross country teams combined to earn five individual medals, including three top-six finishes, at Tuesday’s Logan-Magnolia Invitational. The IKM-M boys placed seventh out of 12 full-squad teams with a score of 133 and the AHSTW boys took eighth with a 216. The Lady Vikes, meanwhile, placed sixth out of 12 girls teams with a 167. The IKM-Manning girls had just two runners competing but both fared quite well.
