State begins mailing voter ID cards

DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announced on Monday that his office will begin mailing Voter ID cards this week to registered voters in the state who do not possess a valid Iowa driver’s license or non-driver’s ID.    The cards are free and will be sent automatically to 123,000 Iowans, roughly six percent of the state’s registered voters.

Muriel Bacon will mark 99th birthday in December

HARLAN -- Muriel L. Bacon of Harlan will mark her 99th birthday on December 7.  She plans to celebrate with family and friends.    Muriel’s children are Marjorie Muller and her husband, Robert Grim, Danielsville, PA; Michael Muller and his wife, Barbara, Harlan; step-children, Valli Jensen and her husband Scott, Hot Springs Village, AR; and Max Bacon Jr. and his wife Wendy, Sedona, AZ.

Clarks celebrate 50 years of marriage

HARLAN -- Phil and Gloria Clark of Harlan will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on December 9. The Clarks reside at 1030 Oak Road, Harlan, IA 51537.    They plan to celebrate with their family which includes combined 11 children and 27 grandchildren. Phil retired after serving 24 years in the United States Air Force.

Treynor tops Vikings

 TREYNOR (Nov. 28) -- One bad quarter proved costly for the AHSTW boys basketball team Tuesday night as the Vikings lost their season opener at Treynor 61-55. The second quarter was the difference in the game as Treynor outscored the Vikings 15-4 to take a 25-17 halftime advantage. R.J. Harris led AHSTW with 20 points in defeat, followed by Dalton Fischer with 12 points, Jake Martin 10, Kevin Jorgensen seven and Jack Paulson 4.

Spangenberg joins IGCA Coaches Hall of Fame

 CARROLL -- Former Red Oak and Harlan Community coach Angie Spangenberg was inducted into the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Carroll High School. This year’s Hall of Fame ceremony was held during the annual IGCA Senior All-Star Weekend.

Cyclone boys win jamboree

 CRESTON (Nov. 24) -- Racing out to a 33-9 lead, the Harlan Community boys basketball team defeated Chariton 56-35 in one half of play Friday night at the Southwestern Community College jamboree in Creston. Senior Shane Chamberlain led HCHS with 21 points and made five of the team’s nine 3-pointers.
