Bombers take out Cyclone girls in defensive battle

ALL THAT JAZZ

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Schools Jazz Program hosted a concert Friday, Feb. 26 where the Harlan Jazz Experience, Harlan Jazz Ensemble and Harlan Middle School bands were recording for virtual contests.    Family members were able to be in attendance for the recording session, getting one of the first glimpses of the band performances this year, due to the pandemic.

Museum of Danish America open to the public

    ELK HORN -- After closing for COVID-19 precautions last November and moving to online programming, the Museum of Danish America has reopened to the public.    The museum’s new hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Masks and social distancing are required.    During the closure, staff worked to refresh the galleries.

Myrtue keeps tax asking steady for ‘22

    HARLAN -- The Myrtue Medical Center Board of Trustees approved the proposal to lower the current tax levy of $1.15366 per thousand taxable valuation to $1.13185 for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.    Approval was made following the February 23 public hearing for the county tax budget where no written or verbal comments or objections were received.    Taxable valuations are expected to be at $938,867,330 for 2021-2022 up from $921,116,431 in 202

Vernie Miller, 86

    IRWIN -- Vernie Joseph Miller, 86, Irwin, died March 2 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center.    A private family service will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance.  Private family visitation will be Sunday, March 7 from 1-3 p.m.

Marjorie Carrigan, 82

    HARLAN -- Marjorie Ellen Carrigan, 82, Harlan, died March 3 at the Salem Lutheran Homes.    Services will be held Saturday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Patrick Cemetery in Neola.  A rosary will be held Friday, March 5 at the church in Portsmouth.  Visitation is Friday from 5-8 p.m.

Fern Knudsen, 92

ELK HORN -- FerneKnudsen, 92, Elk Horn, died March 2 at the Salem Lutheran Homes.    Services will be held Monday, March 8 at 2 p.m. at Faith Family Church in Harlan with burial in the Jacksonville Cemetery.  Family will greet friends Monday from noon-2 p.m.

James Jacobs, 83

BURLINGTON -- James Andrew Jacobs, 83, Burlington, formerly of Harlan, died Saturday, Feb. 27 at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.    Services were held Thursday, March 4 at 10 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish-St.
