Spartans lose twice in RVC, finish tied for league softball crown

 KIMBALLTON (July 1) -- The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton softball team lost its final two games of the regular season last week to fall into a tie for first place in the Rolling Valley Conference. The Spartans lost a home game to CAM, 2-0, last Wednesday as Cougar pitcher Helen Riker fired a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts.

Cyclone softball team sweeps Cardinals

HCHS baseball splits twin bill at Clarinda

 CLARINDA (July 1) -- Harlan Community split a baseball doubleheader at Clarinda Thursday night, losing game one 11-5 before dominating the night cap 15-1 in just five innings. The Cyclones finished the twin bill with a record of 12-12 overall and 10-9 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference.     HARLAN -- Elizabeth Marie Markham, 99, Harlan, died July 12 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Friday, July 16 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  A rosary was held Thursday, July 15 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation was Thursday from 5-8 p.m.

    HARLAN -- Verle E. Greer, 96, Harlan, died April 12, 2020 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital.    Services will be held Friday, July 16 at 4 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation is Friday from 2-4 p.m.

Donald Hansen, 92

    WALNUT -- Donald Dale Hansen, 92, Walnut, died July 8 at Peace Haven Retirement Home.    Services will be held Saturday, July 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut with burial in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.  Visitation is Friday, July 16 from 3-8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at the church.    Hansen is survived by sons Donald (Loleta) Hansen Jr.

Mulligans Ready for Shelby County Fair

    DEFIANCE -- The Mulligan family is looking forward to participating in the Shelby County Fair this year after activities were reduced during the pandemic last summer.    Andy and Tiffany Mulligan have been avid supporters of the fair for years.
