HCHS wins three matches at “Master Blaster” tourney

 ROCKWELL CITY (Sept. 11) -- The Harlan Community volleyball team finished with a 3-2 record at Saturday’s South Central Calhoun “Master Blaster” Tournament held at Rockwell City. HCHS (10-5 overall) opened the day with a 23-21, 21-18 win over Ridge View, which is ranked 13th in Class 2A. The Cyclones lost their next two matches against 12th-ranked (2A) Kuemper Catholic (14-21, 15-21) and East Sac County (18-21, 18-21).

Southwest Valley tops Vikings 14-12

 AVOCA (Sept. 10) -- The AHSTW football team dropped to 0-2 in Class A, District 7 (1-2 overall) following Friday’s hard-fought 14-12 home loss to Southwest Valley. Both teams scored two touchdowns on the night but the Vikings were unable to convert their PAT attempts, missing an extra point in the second quarter and a two-point try with 3:52 left in the game.

Mullen Acquires Red Oak Express, Glenwood Opinion Tribune

W. Clayton Nielsen, 92

    ELK HORN -- W. Clayton Nielsen, 97, Elk Horn, died July 20, 2020 in Solvang, CA.      Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton.    He is survived by his children Melanie Phoenix, Lance Nielsen and Warren Nielsen.

Angela Gaul, 85

    AVOCA -- Angela T. Gaul, 85, Avoca, died September 14 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Earling.  A rosary will be held Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation is Friday from 4-8 p.m.

Donald Jensen, 76

    ELK HORN -- Donald E. Jensen, 76, Elk Horn, died Saturday, Sept. 11 at his home in Elk Horn.    Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m.

Shelby County Walk set for Saturday, Sept. 18

    HARLAN -- Harlan will host a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Saturday, Sept. 18 at Pioneer Park to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research and care.    Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the ceremony at 10 a.m.

    COUNTY – Shelby County’s nationally-recognized Relay for Life fundraising event for cancer research and education has been re-imagined this year with a shorter, health-conscious program scheduled at Merrill Field in Harlan Saturday, Sept.
