    HARLAN — This year’s Iowa Mother of the Year award was given to Ellen Walsh-Rosmann of Harlan. She is the 74th woman in Iowa history to be so named. Walsh-Rosmann, along with honorees from states across the United States, will be recognized during the 88th National Convention of American Mothers, Inc. this April in Omaha, Neb.    “It’s very humbling. I know there are a lot of other mothers that are more deserving,” Walsh-Rosmann said.

Cyclones drop game to Monarchs in overtime

The HCHS varsity boys basketball team was hoping for redemption Tuesday night at home against the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs, after dropping their previous game to them on the road Dec. 9, but dropped the game in overtime, 69-63.

Cyclones soundly defeat Monarchs on Senior Night

Junior Erica Rust and Sophomore Aubrey Schwieso both scored 22 points en route to victory over the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs on senior night. For the Cyclones, they snap their 2-game losing streak and earn their 10th win.
“It definitely feels good,” Schwieso said. “I think we needed some confidence and I think we came out and played a really good game tonight.”

Spartans lose second game of the season to 12-1 Hawkeyes

Senior Hawkeye Koleson Evans stole the show with 25 points en route to a 78-58 victory over the Exira-EHK Spartans Monday night.
“We just had to compete,” said Spartans Head Coach Doug Newton. “Try to match their intensity, do the job on defense and execute on offense. They were a little better at it than we were early.”

Spartans cruise to eighth consecutive win

Seniors Quinn Grubbs and Shay Burmeister led the Spartans in scoring as they cruised to their eighth consecutive victory, 72-25, over the West Harrison Hawkeyes.
“We wanted to make sure that we don’t develop bad habits while we were playing,” said Spartans Head Coach Tom Petersen. “I thought in the beginning we were kind of giving up too much dribble penetration, so we talked a little bit about it.”

Mila Rie Crees

Our sweet Mila Rie Crees was born on January 8th, 2023. She was a perfect 3lbs 5oz and 17 inches long.She was born with a rare condition and because of this she had a challenging road ahead. She fought hard through many procedures and showed us her amazing strength and grace.On January 10th she went peacefully to heaven in our arms.

Edward Theodore Leinen, 73

Edward Theodore Leinen, 73, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, Iowa. Born on August 22, 1949 to Michael and Ramona (Slaven) Leinen in Portsmouth, Iowa, Edward was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He attended grade school and high school at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama, Iowa, graduating in 1967.
