Burglary suspects in custody

HARLAN —     Two burglary suspects within Shelby County have been arrested and are being held in custody under a $50,000 bond.    The suspects of several recent burglaries within Shelby County led to the arrest of 57-year-old Rodney Craig Musich of Harlan and 29-year-old Brandon Lee Bemister of Herman, Neb.    Sheriff Neil Gross said with some help from the public and an aggressive deputy staff, it came to an arrest quickly.    “The guys staye

600 served at annual Cattlemen’s Banquet

PANAMA —  With 900 pounds of meat, 600 people served and thousands of dollars in scholarships presented, the annual Shelby County Cattlemen’s Banquet was Saturday at St. Mary’s Hall in Panama. More than $50,000 was raised during the trophy auction.    Several awards were presented during the event. Cattleman of the Year was awarded to Randy (Motor) Bruck. The Friend of the Industry Award was presented to Alan Mores.

Cyclones finish off Titans at home

Senior Brad Curren scored 18 points to lead the way for the Cyclones en route to a 51-42 victory over the Lewis Central Titans at home Friday night.

Senior Cole Scheffler made history for the Vikings Thursday night at home against the Treynor Cardinals becoming the all-time steals leader in the history of AHSTW.

Jazz students learn from professional

HARLAN – Nationally known songwriter, professional musician and educator Willie Murillo brought his expertise and talent to the Harlan Community School District for an educational clinic and master class for students in the jazz program. The day concluded with a career workshop and concert, with a song commissioned for the Harlan Community Jazz Experience group.

Water, gas capacity reason for upcoming HMU projects

HARLAN —     The Harlan Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees at their regular meeting Jan. 26 approved a 25-cent increase of the gas billing charges for HMU.    HMU contracted with Bill Lindley from Clayton Energy for their gas purchases on December 1, 2022. Lindley gave a presentation regarding the structure of the proposed new gas billing during the board’s regular meeting.

Wolves back in win column after dominating Big Reds

Freshman Ben Ramsey led the way for the Wolves Tuesday night at home to a dominant 63-46 victory over Missouri Valley to snap a 3-game losing streak.
“Last week was a tough week for us,” said Wolves Head Coach Keith Wagner. “We played some really good competition, all on the road, and we wanted to try and bounce back tonight.”

Cyclones get shut down by Huskies at home

The HCHS boys varsity basketball team ran into a buzzsaw Monday night, falling to the Winterset Huskies, 66-52.
“We ran into a very, very hot shooting team,” said Cyclones Head Coach Mitch Osborn. “Winterset is definitely capable of that. They were on fire. They had seven 3’s at the half. I think they had seven or eight the second half.”
