New 100-page book on the history of Harlan’s downtown is available

    HARLAN - The making of the 2023 historic downtown Harlan history book had been on Alan Mores’ mind since 2020 when he delved again into the history of the 51 buildings that surround the downtown square.    The original 2002 downtown guide was based on the work of historical consultant, the late Leah D.

Expert witnesses provide testimony at Iowa Utility Board pipeline hearing

Cyclones to take on undefeated Panthers

After coming off an impressive 42-6 victory over the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors, the Cyclones will head to Creston Friday to take on the undefeated Panthers team, which is coming off a dominant 50-21 win over the Carroll Tigers.
“It’s always interesting going down to Creston,” said Cyclone Head Coach Todd Bladt. “We’re excited for the opportunity. It’s two good football teams that are going to meet up.”

Cyclones roll to dominant win

The Cyclones struck early Friday night against Sergeant Bluff on a 17-yard touchdown run by Senior running back Noah Schmitz with just over a minute played. The Cyclones cruised to a 42-6 victory.

Spartans drop match in five sets to Tigers

Thursday’s volleyball match between the Exira-EHK Spartans and the Woodbine Tigers started off in a back-and-forth affair, but the Tigers ultimately came away with the victory winning sets four and five 25-12 and 15-9 to earn its fifth win of the season and hand the Spartans its fifth loss.

Vikings go the distance at home against the Panthers

It took five sets to dictate the winner of Tuesday’s volleyball game, but the Logan-Magnolia Panthers came out victorious over the AHSTW Vikings, winning three of five.
The Panthers took set one 25-20, the Vikings won sets two and three, 25-15 and 15-13, but the Panthers won the final two sets, 25-21 and 15-9.

Vikings, Wolves & Spartans compete at AHSTW Invitational

The AHSTW Vikings, IKM-Manning Wolves, and Exira-EHK Spartans had multiple runners compete strong at the Avoca Golf & Country Club Tuesday afternoon including six runners finishing in the top 20 on the girls side and four runners finishing in the top 25 on the boys side.

Cyclones prepare to battle Warriors at home

For the second week in a row, the HCHS football team will be at Merrill Field hosting the 1-2 Sergeant Bluff-Luton Warriors.

Lorrel James Borkowski, 79

 Lorrell James, son of Albert and Anna (Bald) Borkowski, was born June 20, 1944, at home in Audubon County, Iowa. He grew up south of Manning near Gray and graduated from Manning High School in 1962. Lorrell served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967 and became a proud member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Bessie Fern Langer, 105

Bessie Fern Langer, the daughter of Roscoe A. and Lillian K. (Matthiessen) Buck, was born on January 30, 1918, near Harlan, Iowa. She attended country school near Panama, Iowa, and graduated from Shelby (Iowa) High School in 1936.  On June 21, 1937, Bessie married LeRoy J. Langer in Shelby, and the couple made their home in Independence, Missouri, for many years.
