Benjamin Nicholas Stein, 40

Benjamin Nicholas Stein was born on December 18, 1982 in Harlan, IA.  In his early years he loved dressing up as a superhero, coining himself as Benji the Avenger Stein. He spent many years playing baseball for Portsmouth with his brother Nick as a teammate and dad Kenny and uncle Larry as coach.

Atlas Daniel-Joe Gittins

Atlas Daniel-Joe Gittins was born on May 8, 2023 to Amelia Barron and Garrett Gittins in Omaha, Nebraska. Atlas was the sweetest baby boy with the most radiant smile and silliest giggle. In his short three months and fifteen days on Earth, he impacted his family greatly.

Andrew John Boettger

Andrew John Boettger was born on February 5th, 1974 in Harlan, Iowa and left us way too soon at the age of 49 on July 7th, 2023. Andy was born and raised in Harlan, Iowa and was a proud graduate of Harlan Community High School in 1992.

Lee Franklin Stinn, 78

  Lee Franklin Stinn, son of Wilfred Joseph and Arlene Marie (Sick) Stinn, was born on August 7, 1944 in Harlan.  He was raised on a farm outside Portsmouth and attended Cass Township country school through eighth grade.  He then attended Harlan High School and graduated with the class of1962.  After high school, he worked various jobs until May, 1965 when he was drafted and joined the Air Force.  During his service, he was stationed in Florid

Roger James Sorensen, 77

 Roger James Sorensen – a follower of Jesus Christ and devoted husband, son, brother, dad, papa, great grandpapa and friend, went home to be with his Savior on July 28, 2023 at the age of 77. Roger was born June 17, 1946 in Atlantic, Iowa to Merlin and Ethel Sorensen.

Tracie Ward

   Tracie was born on July 17th, 1969 at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines. She was adopted into her family in August of 1969. She was baptized and made her first communion at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. She attended St. Boniface Catholic School until the family moved to Harlan and then went to St. Michael’s Catholic School where she was confirmed.

Jessie Mae Bates, 80

Jessie Mae Bates, daughter of Lillian and Herman Caldwell was born January 3, 1943 in Seymour, Missouri. She was baptized at a young age in the Baptist faith. Jessie attended a one room country school from 1st grade until 6th grade. She then went on to Republic, graduating in 1960.After graduation, she moved to Springfield, Missouri and worked at some well known restaurants.

Randy Lee Greer, 69

Randy Lee Greer, son of Robert Louis Greer and Lois Ethel (Arnold) Greer Wirth, was born on July 4, 1953 on the Naval base in Pensacola, Florida. He was baptized at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Council Bluffs, Iowa and confirmed at the Congregational Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. He attended Peterson Grade School in Council Bluffs, Iowa until his move to Harlan. He continued his education in the Harlan Community School District.

Pamela Jo Captain (Gettys)

Pamela Jo Captain (Gettys) passed away peacefully at her home in Joplin, MO on July 29th 2023. She was no doubt met with love and open arms by her late husband of 44 years, Danny.She was born in Denison,  IA on May 27 1950 to Gene and Marie Gettys. She was raised by Gene and Jan Gettys in Harlan after her mother Marie passed away when Pam was age 7 .

Harlan earns second win in close battle at home

In the fourth quarter with three seconds to go and the game tied at 14, Junior kicker Nolan Schwery kicked a game winning field goal and the Cyclones bench rushed the field and jumped on Schwery’s back, giving the Cyclones their second win of the season and handing Glenwood its first loss.
