HARLAN -- On Tuesday night at Denison, the Harlan Community softball team was able to survive six errors and grind out a 13-12 win over the Monarchs. One night later in Harlan, however, five errors in the fourth inning alone were simply too much to overcome. Sergeant Bluff-Luton took full advantage of the Cyclone generosity, plating eight unearned runs in the top of the fourth and beating HCHS 13-3 in five innings. The Cyclones (3-3 overall)

 AVOCA -- The AHSTW girls soccer team had at least 10 reasons to feel good about Tuesday’s Class 1-A, Region 2 quarterfinal vs.

 WINTERSET -- The Harlan Community softball team finished 1-1 at the Winterset Softball Tournament last weekend, beating Nodaway Valley 8-5 in Friday’s first round game before losing to A-D-M 11-2 in the semifinal round Saturday. The third-place game was rained out.

    HARLAN -- A memorial Mass for Rosa Lee Margaret Byrnes, 84, Harlan, will be held on Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Rosa Lee died on March 12 in Harlan.    Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Pat Byrnes of Harlan, seven children, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

    AVOCA -- Erwin Ferdinand Sieh, 93, Avoca, died June 6 at Avoca Specialty Care.    Services were held Thursday, June 9 at 1:30 p.m.

    HARLAN -- Kenneth Lee Escher, 81, Harlan, died June 6 at University of Nebraska Medical Center.    Services will be held Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  A masonic service will be held Friday, June 10 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.  Visitation is Friday from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-8 p.m.

    HARLAN -- Edward “Ed” Zeno Leinen, 81, Harlan, died June 5 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Friday, June 10 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Earling.  A wake service was held Thursday, June 9 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Visitation was Thursday from 5-8 p.m.

    HARLAN -- Ardis Svendsen of Harlan will celebrate her 80th birthday on June 13. Her family is planning a card shower in her honor. Cards will reach her if sent to 1507 Durant Street, Harlan, IA 51537.    Ardis and her husband, Elliott, have been married 61 years.  Their children are Doug and Lori Svendsen, Harlan; Annette and Mike Lamb, Victor, IA; and Steve and Sarah Svendsen, Rice Lake, WI.
