JoAnne Sanders, 84

    ELK HORN -- JoAnne Sanders, 84, Elk Horn, died June 13 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Private services will be held at a later date.    Sanders is survived by nephew Bradford Chambers of Gainesville, GA, and niece Kim Vrana of South Bend, IN.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan is in charge of arrangements.

Playing “farm” still great hobby for Harlan’s Smith

    HARLAN -- In the late 1940s, Chuck Smith could be found playing “farm” with his brothers in the grove at the age of 10. With walnuts as pigs and acorns as horses, he would dig fields in the dirt.    Now, 65 years later, he’s still playing farm, but with decades of toys.

Golden K gives back to the community

HARLAN -- “Are you Ralph?” Clarence Coenen asks a new Golden Kiwanis member. “Would you like some more coffee?”    As men and women gather at the American Legion building in Harlan every Wednesday for the Golden Kiwanis meeting, they can’t help but show up early.    One of the earliest tends to be Dallas Havick. Entering with a mission, he heads straight to the table to start coffee.

Semi drivers injured when rigs collide

HARLAN -- Two individuals were injured in an accident involving two semis on Highway 59 north of Harlan Friday, June 10.  Shelby County Sheriff’s officials report that the accident occurred about 3:07 a.m. near 1200th St., and both drivers were transported to Myrtue Medical Center for treatment.  The drivers were Barry Shumate, Dow City, and Harold Hilliard, Coushatta, TX.

Farm Safety Day Camp

Engagements - Sarah Olson and Bryan Lucke

    HARLAN -- Craig and Judith Olson of Harlan announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Kathleen to Bryan Nicholas Lucke of Omaha. Bryan is the son of Kevin and Sharon Lucke, Harlan.    The couple plans to marry on July 2 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan.

    HARLAN -- Stanley and Joyce Christensen of Harlan will mark their 60th wedding anniversary on June 16.    The couple’s children and their spouses are Curt and Amy Christensen, Omaha; Beth Ann and Todd Brace, Defiance; Kyle and Suzanne Christensen, Defiance; and Joel and Valerie Christensen, Indianapolis, IN. The Christensens have 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
