BLADT TAKES THE REINS

    HARLAN – Todd Bladt will be the head football coach for the Harlan Community Cyclones this fall, pending approval by the Harlan Community Schools Board of Education at its first meeting in March.    HCS Superintendent of Schools Lynn Johnson said the position has been offered to Bladt and it was accepted this week, although the time frame was after the meeting agenda for Monday’s board meeting so official approval won’t come until March.

Harlan Newspapers hosting Home, Garden & Living Show

    HARLAN -- The 34th Annual Home, Garden & Living Show in Harlan has been scheduled for Sat., March 28 in Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. This year’s event will feature unique products and services offered by dozens of area businesses, as well as wildlife educationals presented by Shelby Co.

Earling hosts its final Bingo Night

    EARLING – It was the end of an era in Earling December 18, as residents from across western Iowa enjoyed the final official Bingo Night.    Back in 1979, bingo was started in this northwest Shelby County community, drawing players for an evening of fun and food, with proceeds provided to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  As many as 100 people would turn out each week for the festivities.

Max levy certification may lead to some confusion

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Fire Department held its annual Awards Banquet and Firefighter Recognition on Saturday evening, Feb. 8 at the C.G Therkildsen Center. Firefighters were recognized for years of service and special achievements.    The Harlan Fire Department has awarded Chad Kroger Firefighter of the Year for 2019.

Shelby County Public Health takes role in Coronavirus response

    COUNTY -- The Shelby County Public Health Department continues to work with the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local partners to monitor and respond to novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).    The virus was first detected in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and has since been detected in other parts of the world, including the U.S.

MMC Board okays renovation bid letting

    HARLAN -- A resolution to authorize publication for notice to bid for the north entrance and third floor renovation project at Myrtue Medical Center was approved by the MMC Board of Trustees in January.    No comments verbal or written were received during the public hearing for the renovation project at the January board meeting.
