Free meals offered for 18 and under kids

HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Schools will be offering free meals during the COVID-19 school closure to children 18 years old and younger.    Meals will be provided to all children without charge with no discrimination.  Participants will be provided breakfast for the next day and lunch for the day of pick-up.    It will be a grab-n-go lunch and breakfast, provided at the high school principal’s office entrance from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Additional COVID-19 cases identified in Iowa

    HARLAN -- The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has been notified of nine additional positive cases of Iowans with COVID-19, for a total of 38 positive cases.    According to IDPH, three individuals are residents of Johnson County; two each from Dallas and Polk Counties; and one each are from Washington and Winneshiek Counties.    On Tuesday, Gov.

No Shelby County cases

    COUNTY -- Myrtue continues to align our response to COVID-19 with the Centers for Disease Control and Protection and the Iowa Department of Public Health.    There is community spread cases of COVID-19 in Iowa, but no cases in Shelby County.    During these extraordinary times, we are making some changes to our hospital visitation policy at Myrtue Medical Center.

Call police first; 911 for emergencies

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Police Department is implementing new procedures.      If you need to make a police report, please call the department at 712-755-5151 instead of coming into the office.  If you have an emergency, you still need to call 911.  Currently, the department is not closing its office, but asks for patron consideration to call, rather than making a personal appearance.

SC Jail cancels inmate visitation

    COUNTY -- The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is doing its part in preparing and taking precautions regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.    Currently, the Shelby County Jail has cancelled all family and friend visitation, all jail programming, and all jail classes inside the facility, and public fingerprinting until April 6.    “We will continue to monitor the situation and make changes as they arise,” said jail administrator Kyle Lindberg.  “O

Marne Elk Horn office closed to public

REGIONAL -- Marne Elk Horn Telephone Co. will staff offices in Elk Horn, Walnut and Avoca, however doors will be locked to the general public.  It will be accepting calls and e-mails from clients and have a drop box for bills.    It will be limiting on-site appointments at customer premises to those services that are essential such as (but not limited to) complete phone, internet and cable outages.

Wipe down those phones to stop spread

    REGIONAL - Recent studies have found that coronaviruses can possibly last on surfaces, such as metal, glass or plastic, for two hours and up to nine days. Therefore, people are encouraged to take precautionary measures and regularly clean devices.    Use a damp, lint-free cloth and wipe them clean.  It is okay to use disinfectant wipes, officials say.

HMU limits telecom calls, closes office

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Municipal Utilities has made some decisions regarding its services as it relates to the concerns over the COVID-19 virus.    “The current concern about the COVID-19 virus makes all of us pause and consider how an outbreak may affect our employees, customers and operations. Shelby County Courthouse locks doors

    COUNTY -- To provide safety and to limit foot traffic in and out of the courthouse, it was announced Wednesday that the courthouse doors have been locked.    All offices are staffed.  Call that office to set up an appointment for required business at the courthouse.    It is now courthouse policy that there will be no walk-ins.  No property taxes can be paid in person.    At the Shelby County Board of Supervisors meeting on March 17, 2020,

Assistance for employees, employers regarding layoffs

    DES MOINES – Governor Reynolds today announced assistance for workers and employers impacted by layoffs related to COVID-19.  The guidance includes information for employees filing for unemployment insurance claims, as well as information on programs available for employers.    “Iowa has incredible employers accommodating the needs of Iowans during the disruption caused by COVID-19,” said Gov. Jazz Championships canceled
