Incumbents file papers seeking another term

    COUNTY – Local residents considering a run for public office in Shelby County are being made aware this month of the deadlines for the 2020 election, courtesy of Shelby County Auditor Mark Maxwell.    County offices up for election in 2020 include the auditor (Maxwell), sheriff Neil Gross and supervisors Steve Kenkel and Charlie Parkhurst.  All have filed for re-election, and to date are unopposed.

Former Shelby Countian stars at Omaha Community Playhouse

    OMAHA, NE -- Former Shelby County resident Jay Hanson is starring in the Omaha Community Playhouse’s production of Once, running now through March 22 in Omaha.    Once opened February 22 at the Hawks Mainstate Theatre, with performances being held Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through March.

Jazz Experience qualifies for championships

    HARLAN – The Harlan Jazz Experience has qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships by placing first at the district jazz festival last month, and will perform Tuesday, April 7 on the campus of Iowa State University with hopes of securing a state title.    Performance time for Harlan Community will be 12:45 p.m.
 

STATE SPEECH!

    HARLAN -- On Saturday, Feb. 29 the Harlan Community Schools Individual Speech Team, under the direction of Lisa Hagemeier, traveled to Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs for the Iowa High School District Speech Competition.      Those performers who earned a division I rating will perform again at IHSSA State Speech competition on March 14, at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs.

Harlan proposes bond for fire truck, street work

    HARLAN -- The City of Harlan is proposing a $1.1 million bond issue to pay for a new fire truck, street work, and self-containing breathing apparatuses for the fire department.    On Tuesday, March 3, the council voted unanimously to set March 17 as the date for a public hearing on the authorization of a loan agreement and issue of not to exceed $1.1 million in general obligation capital loan notes.

Coronavirus confirmed in three Iowa residents

    STATE -- Testing at Iowa’s State Hygienic Laboratory has indicated three presumptive positive cases of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Iowa residents.    According to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), the individuals are from Johnson County: one middle-age (41-60 years) adult and two older adults (61-80). Two of the individuals had underlying health conditions. One did not.

    HARLAN – Harlan Community Schools will host a stakeholder engagement meeting Monday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at the HCHS gymnasium in an effort to hear from district residents what they identify as future needs and goals for the school district.    All district patrons are invited to attend.  An optional middle and high school facility tour will be held beginning at 6 p.m.
