 CRESTON – For a minute, the Harlan Community boys basketball team was again on the verge of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat on Tuesday night at Creston. Panther sophomore Kylan Smallwood had other ideas. Smallwood’s step-back three-pointer from the top of the key – his first long-range shot of the game – fell through the net just as the final buzzer sounded, giving Creston a 61-60 overtime victory over the previously unbeaten Cyclon

Schmitz rolls 276 as HCHS bowlers sweep

 COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Lucas Schmitz provided the highlight with a school record game score of 276 on Tuesday as the Harlan Community boys bowling team improved to 2-0 with a 213-pin victory over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, 2,745 to 2,532, at Thunderbowl. The HCHS girls (1-1) also secured a win, edging the Lynx by 28 pins, 1,977 to 1,949.

Rasmussen scores 22 as Spartan girls roll to 7-0

 ELK HORN -- Dominating both early and late, the 3rd-ranked (1-A) Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton girls basketball team cruised to 7-0 here Tuesday night with a 73-31 win over Coon Rapids-Bayard. The Spartans raced out to a 21-3 lead after one quarter and outscored the Crusaders 19-0 in the fourth.

Crusader boys hand Exira-EHK first loss, 61-54

 ELK HORN -- The Coon Rapids-Bayard boys handed Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton its first loss of the basketball season Tuesday night, winning a tightly-contested Rolling Valley Conference game, 61-54. Final statistics were nearly even across the board as both teams shot 53 percent from the field and 63 percent at the free throw line.

Viking wrestlers dominate home meet, improve to 4-4

 AVOCA -- Nine AHSTW wrestlers picked up two wins on the night as the Vikings swept a home double dual vs. St. Albert and Southwest Iowa (Sidney) on Tuesday. AHSTW (4-4 overall) beat the Falcons 54-9 before handling the Cowboys 54-30. Southwest Iowa secured second place with a 57-18 win over St.
