    IRWIN -- Mary Joe Oliver, 90, Irwin, died Wednesday, Feb. 8 in Harlan.    Services will be held Monday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. at Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan with burial at 2 p.m. at the Middle Fork Cemetery in Redding.  Friends may call Sunday, Feb. 12 from 1-7 p.m. with family greeting friends from 3-5 p.m. at the funeral home.    Oliver is survived by her husband, William W.

Margaret Dalbey, 85

    HARLAN -- Margaret A. Dalbey, 85, Harlan, died February 8 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be Saturday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation is Saturday from noon-2 p.m. at the church.    Dalbey is survived by her husband, Dr.

Ronald Plumb, 83

    OLATHE, KS -- Ronald Eugene Plumb, 83, Olathe, KS, died January 20 in Olathe.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Harlan Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Saturday from 10-11 a.m.

The Rev. Donald Matthiessen, 87

    STERLING, IL -- The Rev. Donald Matthiessen, 87, Sterling, IL, died Friday, Feb. 3 at Regency Care in Sterling.    Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls, IL.  Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church Cemetery in Elk Horn.  Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 5-7 p.m.

Kimballton’s Sand will be featured in short film to debut on February 19

    REGIONAL -- Husker Sand, a short film by independent filmmakers Tommy Haines and Andrew Sherburne, will be shown as part of an hour-long episode of The Film Lounge.    The Film Lounge is a locally produced collection of short films selected from dozens of entries by representatives of Iowa Public Television, Produce Iowa and the Iowa Arts Council.    The film will be aired on February 19 at 10 p.m. on Iowa Public Television.

HFD HONORS VOLUNTEERS

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Fire Department held it’s annual appreciation dinner Sat., Jan. 28 at the C.G. Therkildsen Center in Harlan, thanking its volunteer members for their efforts protecting life and property during the past year.  Chief Roger Bissen also recognized new members and those who have recently retired from the department. Cattlemen have donated $313,250 since 2010 for scholarships/loans

    DEFIANCE - Each year the annual Cattlemen’s banquet is the place to be for great food, an outstanding community auction and friendship.  This year was no different as St. Peter’s Parish Center in Defiance was again packed as more than 700 area residents and cattlemen attended the event.

Elmer Wageman, 92

    HARLAN -- Elmer Wageman, 92, Harlan, died February 3 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance with burial in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery at Defiance.  A wake service will be held Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.  Visitation is Friday, Feb. 24 from 5-8 p.m.

Christian Johannsen, 46

    HARLAN -- Christian Frederick Johannsen, 46, Harlan, died February 2 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services were held Monday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.

PINK OUT A SUCCESS!

    HARLAN – The annual Pink Out event at Harlan Community High School to raise awareness of and funding for cancer research was considered a huge success last Friday.    HCHS’s Nancy Osborn said, “It is always an honor to host an event such as this, and although we did not specify an honored survivor, we wanted to make sure all cancer survivors were honored.
