Assmanns mark 60 years of marriage

    RURAL EARLING -- John and Georgean Assmann of rural Earling will mark their 60th wedding anniversary on May 20. They plan to celebrate with their family at a later date.    Their family includes Connie and Bob Owens, Allan and Kelly Assmann, and Sheryl and Frank Kilton all of Omaha. The Assmanns have six grandchildren.

Card shower will help Marian Riessen celebrate

    HARLAN -- Marian Riessen of Harlan will mark her 85th birthday on May 23. Her family is planning a card shower in her honor. Cards will reach her if sent to 2004 Garfield, Apt. 104, Harlan, IA 51537.    Her children are Dan and Jackie Riessen, Avoca; Mark and Linda Winfree, Oberlin, OH; Rod and Lois Riessen, Harlan; and Lisa and Aaron Molnar, Emerson, IA.

Pomp and Circumstance

REGIONAL -- Ten students will graduate this week with the highest distinction at Harlan Community High School, ranked as the top 10 senior students at HCHS based on grade point average.    The students will be recognized during commencement ceremonies to be held Sunday, May 21 at 2 p.m.

City of Shelby seeks title to abandoned property

SHELBY -- The City of Shelby is seeking title to a property in Shelby it has considered abandoned.    According to a petition filed in Shelby County District Court, the property is located at 420 East St., and includes a building that is abandoned, vacant and dilapidated.  Having interest in the property, according to court documents, are Larry Moore and Caryl J. Moore as deedholders; Ouren Title, Inc.

Goetzman joins Harlan Newspapers

HARLAN -- Jacey Goetzman, Muscatine, recently joined the Harlan Newspapers as its summer intern.    Goetzman is a freshman studying journalism and mass communications as well as French at Iowa State University in Ames.    Goetzman said she has no specific plans after graduation, but that she does want to continue writing in the field of journalism.    While Goetzman didn’t begin exploring journalism until college, she quickly fell in love with

Tivoli Fest to host first-ever Æbleskiver eating contest

ELK HORN -- World champion Matt Stonie will compete with other top competitive eaters at the first-ever Annual Tivoli Fest World Æbleskiver Eating Championship sanctioned by Major League Eating on May 27 at 2 p.m. at Tivoli Fest, held in downtown Elk Horn.    Æbleskiver are a type of round pancake cooked in a special stove-top pan with half-spherical molds. The center is soft and fluffy and the crust is crisp and browned.

Individual golds highlight Cyclone H-10 results

 DENISON -- Several of Harlan Community’s top track and field stars shone brightly Thursday night as the Cyclones wrapped up regular season action at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Co-Ed Meet in Denison. HCHS seniors Allison Bruck and Gillian Streit, along with sophomores Greichaly Kaster and Chloe Hansen, all won their signature event as the Cyclone girls scored 102 points and placed third in the final team standings. Junior Nick Foss also had a

District track meets set for Thursday night

 REGIONAL -- Qualifiers for Iowa’s 2017 State Track and Field Championships will be determined Thursday night (May 11) when Co-Ed State Qualifying Meets are held statewide at 4:00 p.m. The area’s four track schools will compete at three different venues. The Harlan Community girls and boys squads will be part of an eight-team Class 3-A meet at Denison.

Coach Bladt selected for NHSACA National Hall of Fame induction

 HARLAN -- The National High School Athletic Coaches Association has announced the upcoming induction of Harlan Community High School football coach Curt Bladt into the NHSACA National Hall of Fame. This year’s induction ceremony for the Class of 2017 will take place on June 20 at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s national convention at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria, Illinois.

HCHS tennis boys finish 7-5 in duals

 RED OAK -- The Harlan Community boys tennis team rode a wave of momentum into postseason action following Thursday’s 8-1 dual win at Red Oak. Coupled with a 7-2 victory at Clarinda one week earlier, the Cyclones finished regular-season play with an overall record of 7-5 and a Hawkeye Ten mark of 5-4. The Cyclones’ only loss to Red Oak (6-5, 4-5 H-10) came in a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles.
