Cyclone girls punch ticket back to 3A State Meet

 WINTERSET (Oct. 20) -- The Harlan Community girls cross country team clinched a fourth consecutive state meet appearance last Wednesday, placing third out of 12 schools in the Class 3A State Qualifying Meet held at Winterset’s Lakeview Country Club. The girls’ field was headlined by three teams ranked in 3A’s top five by the IATC: No. 2 North Polk, No. 4 Dallas Center-Grimes and No.

Three area runners qualify for 1A State Cross Country

 PANORA (Oct. 21) -- Caden Keller and Emily Albertsen of IKM-Manning, along with AHSTW’s Rylie Knop, have qualified for the 2021 State Cross Country Meet. All three area runners advanced by placing in the top 10 of last Thursday’s Class 1A State Qualifying Meet at Panorama West Golf Course. They will now compete in Saturday’s (Oct. 30) 1A State Meet at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course north of Fort Dodge.

Small Tractor Fire

Harlan Fire Dept. called to this tractor fire on Highway 44 near Oak Road just now. Reports says a tire problem resulted in a small fire along the side of the road.

Costume Contest Winners!

    ELK HORN -- The Danish Villages Improvement Organization (DVIO) hosted it’s annual costume contest.  This year’s event was held at the Town Hall in Kimballton and included all sorts of costumes, prizes and fun.  As children arrived they could snack on cookies made by Julie Andersen, and have juice boxes donated by Danielle Albert.      The costume contest began at 7:30 p.m.

Trick or Treating at Nishna Bend!

    CORLEY -- Nishna Bend Recreation Area held its annual trick-or-treating event at the campground and cabins.  It’s the fifth year of the event, which was held October 8.    All 18 campsites and both cabins were decorated.  People walked through and trick or treated at the campsites and cabins.  There were approximately 675 people in attendance.    Highlights here:  Little Edward Scissor hands is Maple Wendl; one of the displays at the event

The Queen of Pop Tabs

Elk Horn Library a place for all ages

    ELK HORN -- The Elk Horn Public Library is a place for all ages to learn, get creative and engage in free activities and events.    Alissa LaCanne and LaJissa Niklasen are behind the scenes of the library and run all of its daily operations.    LaCanne started her position as the library director in 2014.    “I homeschooled our kids, so we went to libraries wherever we lived.

Shelby County Trails sets ribbon cutting, fundraising challenge

    PANAMA – The Shelby County Trails Board will host a ribbon cutting Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. at the start of the trail and has kicked off a Phase 2 fundraising challenge to raise monies for the project.
