GLENWOOD (June 14) -- Harlan Community took one game from 15th-ranked (Class 4A) Glenwood and nearly pulled off a sweep last Thursday night, instead settling for a Hawkeye Ten Conference softball doubleheader split. HCHS dominated the first game 10-1 before losing the night cap 5-4 in nine innings.

HOUSTON, TX – Margaret (Nielsen) Metcalf, 85, died March 22 in Houston.Family and friends are welcome to attend the memorial service at the gravesite on Saturday, June 23 at 2 p.m.

HARLAN -- Daniel Coy Emerson Riley, 25, Harlan, died June 18 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June23 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Riley is survived by mother Barbara (Kivland)Riley of Harlan and father Brian Riley of Harlan; and sisters Shannon Riley of St. Petersburg, FL and Abigail Riley of Nashville, TN.

HARLAN -- June E. Schaben, 62, Harlan, died Monday, June 18 in Omaha. A memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, June 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance with burial of ashes in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Defiance. Family will greet friends Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. at the church.

    AVOCA -- Douglas Keith Hester, 60, Avoca, died May 31 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.    Services will be held Friday, June 22 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Walnut.  Visitation is Friday from 9:30-11 a.m. at the church.    Hester is survived by brothers Richard Hester of Walnut and James (Roxanne) Hester of Avoca.    Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca is in charge of arrangements. 

    PORTSMOUTH -- Mary J. Springman, 74, Portsmouth, died June 18 at Elm Crest Assisted Living.    Services will be held Saturday, June 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Church in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery at Portsmouth.  Visitation is Saturday from 9-11 a.m.

    HARLAN -- Leona Josephine Kaufmann, 100, Harlan, died June 18 at Elm Crest Retirement Community.    Services will be held Friday, June 22 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia.  A rosary was held Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at the church.  Visitation was Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the church.  Burial will be in the St.

    TENNANT -- Steven Michael Buck, 64, Tennant, died June 16 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital.    Services were held Thursday, June 21 at 11 a.m. at St.

    HARLAN -- Former Harlan City Administrator Terry Cox disagrees with the charges filed against him, plans to plead not guilty to all charges, and is looking forward to clearing his name at trial.    Complaints filed in Shelby County District Court last Friday charged Cox with Theft First Degree, Felonious Misconduct in Office and Tampering with Records.  He turned himself in to the Shelby County Jail Friday, June 15 after an arrest warrant
