OAKLAND -- Priscilla Ann Thraen, 70, Oakland, died January 9 at Oakland Manor Nursing Home.    Services were held Monday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling with burial in the St.

    HARLAN -- Mildred M. “Mick” Bieker, 90, Harlan, died January 9 at Myrtue Medical Center.    Services were held Monday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan with burial in the St.

    IRWIN -- Linda Sue Nordby, 66, Irwin, died January 9 at her home.    Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial at a later date.  Visitation is Tuesday from 9-10:30 a.m.

 DENISON -- Both Harlan Community bowling teams fared well in the Baker Games format but could not overcome their individual round deficits in losing to Denison-Schleswig Dec. 19 at Lucky Lanes. The HCHS girls ended up falling by just 37 total pins (2445 to 2408) after outscoring the Monarchs 831-772 in the Baker Games.

    POCAHONTAS -- Former Harlan resident Norma Ohlinger of Pocahontas will celebrate her 80th birthday on January 17. Her family is planning a card shower in her honor.

    DENISON -- Phylicia Chatham and Dustin Bruck both of Earling were married on September 21, 2019 at The Stables at Copper Ridge, Denison. The bride’s brother, Stephen Chatham, was the officiant for the ceremony.    The bride is the daughter of Chad and Heidi Chatham, Norwalk; and Denise and Lynn Dickerson, Carrollton, TX. The groom is the son of Sharon Bruck and Kelly Reynolds, Earling; and Kevin Bruck, Harlan.
 

    EARLING -- Rachel Gross and Dustin Halstead both of Omaha exchanged marriage vows at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling on September 7, 2019. Father Dan Gehler performed the 2:30 p.m. double ring ceremony.    Parents of the couple are Joe and Gail Gross, Earling; and Jeff and Brenda Halstead, Madison, NC.
 

    COUNTY – For the second consecutive year, the Shelby County Jail has been named one of the Best of the Best in Iowa by the Iowa Department of Corrections (IDOC).    Officials from Shelby County were invited to attend the annual Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies’ Association (ISSDA) annual banquet December 10, where the Department of Corrections recognized six counties as having an outstanding jail and meeting and exceeding jail standards in

    COUNTY – A unique petition filed in Shelby County District Court January 3 has the petitioner requesting a trial by combat, with melee weapons in hand-to-hand combat style to resolve the dispute between he and the respondent.    David Zachary Ostrom has filed a motion for trial by combat against Bridgette Marie Ostrom for resolution of disagreements over alleged “illegal telephone and electronic contact as well as unpaid property taxes.”
