Flight Breakfast Highlights!

    HARLAN -- The 75th annual Flight Breakfast carried on despite rain Sunday, June 20 at Rushenberg Field in Harlan. More than 400 people attended the Father’s Day event to enjoy breakfast and view the airplanes, while five planes flew in for a free breakfast. The event is sponsored by the Harlan 8-Ball Aviation Club.

CUCC Celebrating 150 years!

Downtown parking, lane change effort rejected

    HARLAN – A proposal to change some traffic patterns designed to make the trip leading up to the downtown Harlan square safer and easier was rejected by the Harlan City Council upon second reading of an ordinance that would have implemented the changes.    A 3-1 vote (quorum of full council needed to pass, or 4 votes) wasn’t enough to keep the ordinance change moving ahead to a third and final reading.    The decision came after much public

    HARLAN – As part of the City of Harlan’s comprehensive plan update, residents are being asked to consider taking a community survey, offering their thoughts and opinions on everything from housing, health care and city services to the importance of commercial and manufacturing growth, encouraging families to move to Harlan and arts/culture development, to name a few.    The City of Harlan is partnering with Southwest Iowa Planning Council

Monica Wilke, 83

    PANAMA -- Monica Kathryn Wilke, 83, Panama, died June 18 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital.    Services will be held Wednesday, June 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church in Panama with burial in the St. Mary’s Cemetery at Panama.      A rosary will be held Tuesday, June 22 at 7 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Parish Center in Panama.  Visitation is Tuesday from 5-8 p.m.

Harold Schulte, 89

   WESTPHALIA -- Harold Gustav Schulte, 89, Westphalia, died June 17 at his home.    Services will be held Tuesday, June 22 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia with burial in the St. Boniface Cemetery at Westphalia.  A rosary was held Monday, June 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the church.  Visitation was Monday from 3-8 p.m.

Trojan softball team outlasts HCHS 11-7 in nine

Monson gem leads HCHS baseball past Atlantic 4-3

 HARLAN (June 8) -- Scoring two runs each in the first two innings, the Harlan Community baseball team built an early 4-1 lead and was able to hold off Atlantic 4-3 for a nice Hawkeye Ten victory Tuesday at Jim Goeser Field. HCHS evened its conference record at 3-3 and improved to 4-5 overall going into Thursday’s game at Council Bluffs St.

Walks tell the tale as Cyclones, Stars split twin bill
