Schaben receives Sportsmanship Award

 DES MOINES -- Ron Schaben of Defiance was Harlan Community’s recipient of the Iowa Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award at the 2016 Girls State Basketball Tournament held last week at Wells Fargo Arena. Boys state basketball tournament underway

 DES MOINES -- The IKM-Manning boys basketball team played its first state tournament game since 2010 on Monday morning, facing West Hancock in a 10:30 a.m. Class 1-A quarterfinal at Wells Fargo Arena. A victory Monday would put the 7th-ranked, fifth-seeded Wolves (22-2) in Thursday’s 1-A semifinal round vs. top-seeded Danville (24-1) or St.

Langenfeld, Osborns join HCS Booster Club Hall of Fame

 HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Athletic Booster Club Board of Directors inducted three new members into its Hall of Fame this year, honoring Todd Langenfeld and Mitch and Nancy Osborn during a pre-game ceremony on Friday, February 5, at the HCHS gymnasium.

Coach Juhl honored with seniors

 HARLAN -- Longtime Harlan Community assistant boys basketball coach Kelly Juhl was honored prior to the Cyclones’ Senior Night game vs. Carroll on February 18 and was presented a plaque recognizing his commitment to the program and this year’s senior class. Juhl recently completed his 19th season as an assistant coach to Mitch Osborn at HCHS.

Vera Laver, 96

    ELK HORN -- Vera Alene Laver, 96, Elk Horn, died March 13 at Myrtue Medical Center, Harlan.    Services will be held Wednesday, March 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Kirkman.  Family will greet friends Tuesday, March 15 from 5-7 p.m.

Rosa Lee Margaret Raymond Byrnes, 84

    HARLAN – Rosa Lee Margaret Raymond Byrnes, 84, Harlan, died March 12.    A funeral mass tentatively will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 11 at St.

Harlan Express Flights! Denver to Tucson, back to Denver

    DENVER, CO -- Out of the more than 10,000 plus pilots at United Airlines, only two are Harlan natives. On February 11, Captain Kerry Boltinghouse and First Officer Lisa (Petersen) Christensen operated a Boeing 737 on United Flight #1727 from Denver, CO to Tucson, AZ, and Flight #1138 back to Denver. This would have never been possible if it was not for the merger between Continental and United Airlines in 2010.
