Mural welcome addition in Portsmouth

    PORTSMOUTH -- A mural is in the process of being painted on the large fence along Main Street in Portsmouth.    “The fence was looking plain for years,” said Connie Juhl, community member. “We are just trying to clean up the city a little bit.”    About a year ago Juhl and Laura Anderson, city clerk, began brainstorming a project for the fence, since it is such a prominent part of Main Street.

AHSTW HOMECOMING!

Preparation for ESL students gets HCS okay

Greenridge Steam & Gas Show in Irwin this weekend

Supervisors authorize $5,000 to minimize critter damage

    COUNTY -- Shelby County will pay $25 each for beaver tails from November 5-April 15 as part of an ongoing effort to minimize the damage the critters cause to roadways and structures throughout the county.    The county’s board of supervisors re-authorized the bounty this month, with a total dollar limit outlay of $5,000. Payments will be made on a first come, first served basis.

Hearing Hats

HARLAN -- Emma Barnes found a passion and a cause in sewing headbands for children with hearing aids.    “You know that you’re helping people and you’re helping these families,” Barnes said. “You’re improving the life of the child. Now that they are able to hear, they aren’t taking out their hearing aid and damaging it.”    Barnes’ family friends, Matt and Michelle Bruck, had a child with hearing aids.

Police investigating series of burglaries

    HARLAN – Harlan Police are investigating a series of burglaries and attempted break-ins throughout Harlan the past three weeks, and are asking the public for additional help in catching those involved.    Police chief Frank Clark said the department has received seven reports of burglaries, of which four have been determined to be burglaries and three as suspicious activity.  The most recent was last Thursday morning at roughly 4 a.m., whe

Ahrenholtz inducted into Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame

    AMES - Because of their countless hours given to the Iowa 4-H program, 125 Iowa 4-H volunteers from 95 counties were welcomed into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame on Sunday, Aug. 21 at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.    Among those inducted was Roger Ahrenholtz, Defiance, representing Shelby County.    Inductees were introduced on stage and awarded a certificate.
