HARLAN – It’s the 1960s and there’s change in the air!    The Harlan Community High School Drama Department will present this week its production of Hairspray, the winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs.    Performances are slated for Thursday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 4, each at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov.

Ordinance changing fireworks dates, times sees first approval

    HARLAN – The Harlan City Council has approved the first reading of an ordinance amending its fireworks code, limiting the display of fireworks in Harlan to only two days.    The council voted 6-0 Tuesday, Oct. 17 amending chapter 41 of the city’s ordinance regarding dates and times of fireworks.  The second reading is expected at the next meeting of the council on Tuesday, Nov.

Absentee voting open through Nov. 13

COUNTY -- Shelby County Auditor Mark Maxwell says absentee ballot requests were sent to all mailing addresses available to his office, to the available addresses in Portsmouth, Kirkman, Westphalia, Panama, Tennant and Defiance.    Absentee ballots postmarked on Monday, Nov. 6  or earlier and received by noon Monday, Nov.

She beams as she says the best part of her job as a farmer is that each day is different and brings new challenges.    She returned a year ago with her young family to Shelby County to farm with her dad and grandfather. Harvest Season Gains Speed
