Statement on Violent Act "Rumor" at HCS

The HCSD has been made aware of a rumor which has begun to create increased levels of concern and anxiety amongst students and the community that the school was being targeted for a violent act. As of this communication there is no specific threat against the school. If a student or a parent/guardian comes across information that is contrary to this, please contact the school immediately.

HCHS Students Compete Well at State BPA Conference

HCHS sending two jazz bands to Iowa Jazz Championships

    HARLAN -- For the first time in school history, Harlan Community High School will be sending two bands to the Iowa Jazz Championships.    This year’s event will be held in Ames on the campus of Iowa State University on Thursday, April 5. The Jazz Ensemble, directed by Tom Cronin, will perform at 10:30 a.m. in the Scheman Building.

Local HCHS scholarships over $230,000

    HARLAN - Last spring, an estimated 70 students received local scholarship awards from 48 sponsoring organizations, totaling close to $230,000 in funding.  In 2018 there are 12 new scholarships plus an additional 33 scholarships come from other sources which would likely bring the total to more than $500,000.

Science Night At the Library

    HARLAN -- Approximately 30 kids had fun conducting science experiments during the Family Fun Night at the Harlan Community Library Thursday night, March 1.  Making slime, taste and smell test and poking a bubble without popping it were just a few of the experiments.

HMU, union tentative agreement calls for two percent wage increases

    HARLAN – The Harlan Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees and members of AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) Iowa Council 61 have reached a tentative bargaining agreement.    The board and union representatives met in closed session in early February and came to a tentative three-year agreement.    Union employees will be granted a two percent salary increase per year for the next three years, on July 1, 2

    HARLAN -- Three Harlan Community High School speech students have qualified for the Iowa High School Speech Association state contest to be held next weekend in Nevada following outstanding performances at district competition recently. Holt files petitions for re-election

Exira/EH-K’s Bricker 25th at regional spelling bee

    ELK HORN --  It was the first year for the E/EH-K school champion to attend, and Bricker participated and finished with a tie for 25th place out of 60 school champion spellers. She is the daughter of Nikki and John Bricker of Elk Horn.    The champion will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Hjelle recipient of Mercy Heritage Award for Education

    COUNCIL BLUFFS - Allan Hjelle, Elk Horn, will be honored by CHI Health Mercy Hospital on March 24 at the Mid-America Center, where he will be named a Heritage Award recipient which were created to celebrate those who have enriched the community and established a legacy on which future Heritage Award honorees can build.    Hjelle was born on Dec. 23, 1943, to Arnold and Denise Hjelle, a family of educators.

HMU to move lines, shave berm on 59

    HARLAN -- The Harlan Municipal Utilities board approved a performance agreement with the City of Harlan to move utility lines and trim the berm fronting Highway 59 on the south entrance to Harlan.      The arrangement will be to lower electric, telecommunication and gas lines as well as add a water line in that right-of-way as well as trimming the berm height.    Though there are currently no actual electric lines in place, there is a cond

Organic Farmers of the Year

    HARLAN -- The Rosmanns of Rosmann Family Farms, Harlan, were honored Thursday, Feb. 22 as the 2018 Organic Farmers of the Year at the annual MOSES Organic Farming Conference in La Crosse, WI.    This prestigious award recognizes Midwest farmers for outstanding land management, innovative farming practices, and the outreach they do to teach others how organic farming works.
