Number of area sex offenders remains steady

    REGIONAL – The number of registered sex offenders that call the greater Shelby County area their home has remained steady in the last six months, according to Iowa’s state sex offender registry.    Shelby County and areas surrounding the county have 45 registered sex offenders as of this month, as opposed to December, 2019 when there were 44 registered sex offenders listed in the area.

Schaben loves driving school bus

    DEFIANCE -- Ron Schaben of Defiance said he hasn’t turned down very many trips to drive school bus for activity events during his more than 20 years of serving as a school bus driver for the Harlan Community School District.    “I drive for activities usually whenever I am asked.

Shelby special election July 7

SHELBY -- Rick Kiesel and Patty Welsh are the candidates on the ballot of a July 7 special election to fill a vacancy on the Shelby City Council.    Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.  Voting will take place at the Shelby Community Hall.  Absentee ballots also are accepted.  Monday, July 6 at 5 p.m.

Prairie Rose State Park hike set for July 4

    REGIONAL - A socially distanced two-mile hike will take place on Saturday, July 4 at 9 a.m. at Prairie Rose State Park according to Christina Roelofs, Shelby County and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Naturalist.      “We will meet at the park office and take the trail around the east side of the lake.  This hike is approximately two miles,” she said.    All are invited.

Sarfaroz “Oz” Sharipov grateful for amazing experience at HCHS

    HARLAN -- Although the school year ended differently then he and everyone else had planned, Sarfaroz “Oz” Sharipov is grateful for the time he spent as a student at the Harlan Community High School.    Oz, of Tajikistan (Central Asia), was a foreign exchange student at HCHS during the 2019-2020 school year. His host parents were Rick and Cheryl Chipman, rural Harlan.

HARLAN -- The Harlan Community Schools Board of Education has announced an anticipated vacancy for its District 6 seat.    Now occupied by Tara Devlin-Lawler, officials said last week that the vacancy is anticipated due to Devlin-Lawler accepting employment that takes her into the Harlan Community Schools.  She has been hired by Myrtue Medical Center as a therapist, and will be serving in the HCS elementary schools.    The school board will be

District finalizing Return to Learn plan
