Vikings scrimmage Cyclones at Merrill Field

Sophomore Kassie Anderson opened up the scoring for the Cyclones Friday at Merrill Field with a goal just under four minutes to go in the first half of a scrimmage against the AHSTW Vikings.

“It was great,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jared Boysen. “Carly [Torneten] had a good cross that went off the goalie and she was right where you’d want her to be to finish it off. She did a great job. She’s played some defense and some offense, so it was good to see her get a goal.”

Despite the game not counting in the standings or stats being kept track of, Boysen was proud of what he saw from the girls.

“I was really proud of what we saw, especially coming off Tuesday from the jamboree, there were some things that we could work on and I thought we did well at those things,” he said. “We had a lot of good opportunities going forward on offense. Defensively, not letting them score. Grace [Albertsen] did a great job back there. I like her length and size.”

Torneten had another big moment when she assisted the ball to Sophomore Ivy Stevens, who knocked in their second goal of the night at 24:30 remaining the second half. Being a freshman, Torneten is expected to be one of the high scorers on the team.

“From the jamboree, we talked about getting more passes across and Carly has some speed and moves the ball well up front and getting it across to Ivy and Ivy is strong around the goal, so if you get it anywhere, she’s going to run through it and try to score,” Boysen added. “It was good to see them hooking up to get that goal too.”

The Cyclones played just 40 minutes at the jamboree and 60 at the scrimmage. As of Monday night, their regular season will begin with 80 minutes of soccer opening at Merrill Field at 5 p.m. against the Panorama Panthers, who finished 10-6 last season and were led by Mia Waddle with 18 goals and 10 assists.

“I think they’ll be similar to what they were last year,” Boysen added. “We lost 1-0, but I thought it could have went either way and it’ll be very similar with this one. I think it’ll be a real close game.”

The Cyclones will have their team at full strength after missing three girls in the scrimmage due to track and field at the Carroll Early Bird event missing were Aubrey Schwieso, Kayla Anderson and Lily Schechinger.
