HCHS girls use 18 steals to beat Lady Monarchs, 50-22
DENISON -- The offense was still sporadic at times, but Harlan Community coach Zach Klaassen is doing his best not to complain about 28-point victories.
On Friday night at Denison-Schleswig, defense remained a constant for the third-ranked (4-A) Cyclone girls, who swiped 18 steals using a mix of 1-3-1 and 2-3 zones and defeated the Lady Monarchs 50-22 in a Hawkeye Ten game that did not count toward the conference standings.
Seniors Taylor Frederick (7 rebounds) and Jordyn Moser (5 assists) scored 13 points each to lead HCHS, which overcame a 31 percent shooting night and improved to 2-1 overall. Despite struggling early vs. Denison’s 2-3 zone, the Cyclones led 19-2 in the second quarter and gradually continued to pull away during the second half.
Denison, which shot just 6-of-26 from the field (23 percent), fell to 2-2 on the year.
