Cyclones finish 5th at Invite; Stephens takes 1st

The HCHS girls wrestling team came away with a fifth place finish overall Thursday night at the Treynor Invite with 62 points, 114 points behind the winner, Clarinda with 176.

“The girls performed great as a group,” said Cyclone Head Coach Tarah Devlin-Lawler. “There were some heartbreaking losses, but some major wins as well. They put themselves out there and did what they needed to do, so I’m ecstatic for the girls and proud of the performances they had.”

Elle Stephens set the tone again taking two wins, including a quarterfinals victory over Charlotte Gerdts of Clarinda, beating her in a fall at 3:46, and later earning a first place finish beating Hannah Hekter of Treynor with a fall in 3:49.

“Elle has been doing an amazing job,” Devlin-Lawler said. “She’s getting out on the mat and putting in a lot of effort in focusing on some of those moves and adjusting to when a girl is defending the moves that she’s putting in. She’s focused and determined.”

Danika Schwery was also able to come away with a win in a consolation match over Genevieve Deitchler of Treynor, beating her in a fall at 3:42.

“It was great to see her get a win,” Devlin-Lawler said of Schwery. “During the match, she was looking at us, telling us she couldn’t do it, so when she finally won it was a nice little confidence booster for her, and it was a reminder even when she doesn’t feel like she can do something, she can definitely do it.”

Some other girls who competed where Annaleigh Sheehan, who lost a quarterfinal match to Randi Welchans in 17 seconds, along with Kyrsten Madden who lost to Lily Weinreich of Clarinda in 1:12 with a fall, and Addison Obrecht who lost in a fall in 1:51 to Kambry Gordon of Clarinda. Hallie Lopez went 0-2 on the night, while Lucy Degroot finished in fourth place.

“I’m super confident every one of the girls are going to come away with a win at some point,” Devlin-Lawler said. “Our motto is you go out on the mat, and you either win or you learn. As long as they’re learning, that’s all we really focus on.”

The Cyclones will wrestle at home Monday at 4:30 p.m., where they will compete against Carroll, Kuemper Catholic, and Denison. It will also be Senior Night as Paige Wilwerding, Secilia Kurtz, Katie Namanny, Obrecht, and Madden will be honored.

“We are super excited to be able to host a quad and show the community what our program is,” Devlin-Lawler added. “We haven’t really seen Carroll or Denison. Kuemper has been at a lot of our tournaments, but we’re looking forward to getting out on the mat and having some competition. It’ll be senior night, so we’re excited to honor our seniors as well.”
