Spartans pull away late to punch ticket to the state tournament with a 57-38 win over GTRA
CARROLL — The Exira-EHK Spartans are headed back to Des Moines. Facing the GTRA Titans on Wednesday night with a berth in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Basketball Tournament on the line, the Spartans turned a defensive battle into a commanding 57-38 victory to secure their spot at the Casey’s Center next week.
What began as a grind-it-out contest evolved into a statement performance, as Exira-EHK used a dominant second quarter and late-game composure at the free-throw line to seal the win.
The opening eight minutes reflected the magnitude of the moment. Both teams struggled to generate clean looks against active, disciplined defenses.
The Spartans’ 2-3 zone clogged driving lanes and forced contested perimeter attempts, while the Titans matched the intensity on the other end.
With offense at a premium, Jaelynn Petersen delivered a key late bucket to give the Spartans a narrow 8-7 edge at the end of the first quarter.
After GTRA briefly tied the game at 9-9 early in the second, the Spartans seized control with a decisive run fueled by rebounding, ball movement, and timely shooting. Taryn Petersen attacked the rim and converted at the free-throw line to regain the lead.
Moments later, Zoey Rasmussen ignited the offense with a pair of corner three-pointers that stretched the Titans’ defense and opened driving lanes.
Taryn Petersen continued to assert herself with a putback and a transition finish, while Jaelynn Petersen capitalized after an offensive rebound to extend the margin.

Defensively, the zone was suffocating. Exira-EHK limited second-chance opportunities and held GTRA to just four points in the period, consistently finishing possessions with strong rebounding.
The Spartans wasted little time extending their advantage after the break. Riley Miller scored inside to push the lead to 25-11, setting the tone for another efficient stretch.
Though the Titans chipped away at the free-throw line, Exira-EHK continued to generate high-percentage looks.
Rasmussen knocked down another three to make it 28-17, and Harlow Miller provided a spark with back-to-back interior finishes, including a putback that stretched the lead to 34-21.
Taryn Petersen added a floater off a forced turnover as the Spartans appeared in full control.
Despite a stretch of missed free throws, they dictated tempo and carried a 39-25 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Titans made one last push midway through the fourth quarter.
After baskets from Taryn and Jaelynn Petersen gave the Spartans a 45-28 cushion, GTRA applied full-court pressure that briefly disrupted Exira-EHK’s rhythm.
Turnovers led to quick Titan scores, and back-to-back three-pointers trimmed the lead to 47-36 with just over a minute to play.
Momentum began to shift, but the Spartans never wavered.
Following a technical foul on the Titans’ coach, Exira-EHK capitalized at the free-throw line.
Taryn Petersen calmly converted in the bonus, while Harlow Miller and Jaelynn Petersen added crucial points to restore a double-digit advantage.
From there, the Spartans closed the game methodically, securing rebounds and knocking down free throws to finish off the 57-38 victory.
Taryn Petersen led the Spartans with 21 points, delivering in key moments throughout the contest
Petersen also provided clutch scoring in the fourth quarter and was instrumental at the free-throw line down the stretch.
With the win, Exira-EHK advances to the state tournament for the first time since 2022 and marks its seventh state appearance since 2015 a testament to the program’s sustained success.
