SCCO launches annual Backpack Program for 2026–27 school year
SHELBY COUNTY — As summer flies by, the start of a new school year is just around the corner, and so is the annual back-to-school shopping season. While many families look forward to preparing for the first day of school, the rising cost of backpacks, notebooks, clothing, and other supplies can create a significant financial strain.
To help ease that burden, Shelby County Community Outreach (SCCO) is once again offering its annual Backpack Ministry. The program provides backpacks filled with essential items, along with financial assistance, to help ensure local students begin the school year prepared and confident. More than simply supplying school materials, the ministry strives to give every child the opportunity to start the year with dignity and the tools needed for success.
As in 2025, SCCO will continue using its simplified backpack distribution process for the 2026–27 school year.
Throughout July, volunteers will prepare backpacks with donations from several community partners, including:Backpacks donated by The Salvation Army and Hy-Vee.
Hand sanitizer and tissues donated by Myrtue Medical Center.
Health kits provided by Kindness Kits of Blair, Nebraska.
Bombas socks donated by WCCA.
$25 Chamber Bucks made possible through contributions from local businesses, churches, private donors, and Special Project funding from The Salvation Army Bell Ringing account.
Backpack registration and distribution will begin Aug. 1. Families may visit SCCO/Hero’s Attic, 1105 Eighth St., Harlan, to complete a backpack registration form. Each school-age child listed on the registration form will receive one filled backpack and one gift certificate, while supplies last. Quantities are limited, and backpacks will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Community members who would like to support the Backpack Ministry may make a monetary donation payable to SCCO. Donations may be dropped off at Hero’s Attic, 1105 Eighth St., Harlan, or mailed to SCCO, P.O. Box 69, Harlan, IA 51537.
