HARLAN -- Wes Muenchrath of Harlan Community was one of six Iowa high school senior football players to receive a 2020 Iowa Bankers Association Student Athlete Achievement Award during the state football championship games held Nov. 19-20 in Cedar Falls. One student from each class was presented with a $1,000 scholarship from the IBA to the college of his choice. This year’s recipients were as follows. Eight-Player: Dillon Welter, Don Bosco; Class A: Justin Horgen, Saint Ansgar; Class 1A: Carson Lambert, Southeast Valley; Class 2A: Chancellor Thrasher, West Liberty; Class 3A: Wes Muenchrath, Harlan Community; Class 4A: Jackson Langin, Dowling Catholic. Scholarship recipients are selected each year based on their academic performance, athletic participation, leadership skills and community involvement. Muenchrath was a backup tight end for this year’s 3A state runner-up Cyclones, catching three passes for 32 yards during the playoff run. He also recovered three onside/squib kicks on special teams throughout the year. “These student leaders show dedication not only to their teams, but to their communities as well. We are extremely proud to have this chance to help remarkable Iowa students save toward their higher education,” said Tara Deering-Hansen, the IBA’s vice president of marketing and communications. This year’s recorded scholarship presentations can be viewed on the IBA Facebook page.
