Cyclone grapplers win Panorama quad

Tuesday, the Cyclones boys wrestling team came away with three victories against Panorama 39-30, Colfax-Mingo 57-16, and CAM 56-12.
“All three schools were 1A schools,” said Cyclone Head Coach Adam Bendorf. “I think we’re only running with open weights. That goes a long way in duals, especially against 1A schools that typically don’t have a full lineup. I think we did well. A few of our wrestlers had some tough matches.”
During their match against Panorama, Cyclones Nathan Sandquist, Spencer Fink, Jesse Jens, Coy Obrecht, and Brody McKinley picked up victories.
Sandquist defeated Sam Hansen with a pin at 4:41; Fink won against Cobyn Snyder, pinning him at 1:10; Jens came away with a technical fall victory at 4:42 beating Syler Schaffer, Obrecht pinned Nate Spencer at 2:53; and McKinley earned his victory over Will Knapp by way of a major decision.
“He [Fink] is a senior and he’s coming into his prime and doing well,” Bendorf said. “Jesse is so dedicated to the sport. It’s exciting to see him doing well. He’s good enough to be a state champ.”
In their Colfax-Mingo match, Jamison Clark, Jaden Stephens, Nick Gubbels, Fink, Jens, and Sandquist came away with individual wins.
Clark defeated Xavier Cross pinning him in 45 seconds; Stephens had an even quicker match pinning Willie Fitzgerald in 28 seconds; Gubbels was able to take down Endersbe in a match that lasted 4:58; Fink won via a technical fall over Jayden Cherveny; Jens took a major decision victory against Cason Fitch; and Sandquist picked up a victory over Roam Logan, pinning him in 30 seconds.
“I’m real proud of Jaden Stephens,” Bendorf added. “That kid just doesn’t give up. It was a great effort, and I just love seeing that.”
Against CAM, Jens, McKinley, Gubbels, Sandquist, and Brody Bendorf picked up wins. Jens defeated Parker Wilson pinning him in 23 seconds; McKinley won via technical fall over Kegan Croghan; Gubbels victory came against Drew Barber in 1:05 courtesy of a pin; Sandquist earned his win against Reilly Becker in 19 seconds by pinning him; and Bendorf was able to come away with his win against William Rouse in an 8-2 decision.
“Brody [Bendorf] came off a hip injury from football and missed the first half of the season,” Bendorf said. “Nick is a hard worker and he gets out there and tries his best. Nathan, that kid is on a tear. He’s undefeated down at the Ron Scott tournament at Mount Ayr, and he’s getting more confident and he’s dominating.”
The Cyclones next match was Thursday with a quad that features Red Oak, AHSTW, and Kuemper Catholic at Kuemper Catholic High School.
“I just don’t get real into how or who we’re coming up against,” he said. “I try to teach the boys to prepare for every single match like it’s the state finals, regardless of who you’re wrestling. If you know who you’re wrestling, I think it kind of steals a little bit of preparation from you to where you have your own routine and every match is your match and you prepare your own way.”
