Cyclone boys soccer season ends in 2-0 loss to Greene County
JEFFERSON — The season came to an end Tuesday night for the Harlan Community Cyclones boys soccer team as they fell 2-0 to Greene County in a hard-fought defensive battle in the opening round of the Class 2A Region 8 postseason bracket.
The opening half featured strong defensive play from both sides, with HCHS goalkeeper Lucas Paulsen keeping the Cyclones in the match early. Greene County pressured the attack throughout the first 40 minutes, but Paulsen came up with several key saves to preserve the scoreless tie.
The Cyclones struggled at times to generate runs up the field early, though HCHS began finding better opportunities midway through the half.
Mitchell Vo had a good look from 20 yards out that missed just right with 27 minutes remaining, while Will Schmitz later sent a shot just wide left as the Cyclones continued to build pressure.
Greene County nearly broke through on several occasions late in the half, including a dangerous opportunity off the crossbar by Rams standout Franklin Regalado. Paulsen again answered with a strong save in close as the Cyclone defense forced Greene County into difficult shots throughout the night.
HCHS nearly grabbed momentum before halftime when Alex Medina’s shot slid just wide right in the final minute, sending the teams into the break tied 0-0.
The second half continued the physical and defensive tone.
Greene County played aggressively, picking up two yellow cards while continuing to create dangerous looks near the net.
Paulsen remained busy in goal, making multiple saves early in the half, including a strong stop off a corner kick.
HCHS had chances of its own to break the tie. Cody Swank missed wide on a good opportunity with 37 min-utes remaining, while Vo nearly connected on a bicycle kick in the box that drifted just left.
The Rams finally broke through with 24:08 remaining when Dani Carballo-Aguilar scored to give Greene County a 1-0 advantage.
HCHS responded by pushing numbers forward in search of the equalizer, but the Rams continued creating quality chances.
Paulsen added several more saves to keep the Cyclones within striking distance.
One of the Cyclones’ best chances came with 15 minutes remaining when Levi Obrecht narrowly missed on a strong through ball from Levi Schechinger.
Greene County eventually added insurance with 8:25 left as Carter Hinote scored on a header to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Cyclones were later forced to finish the match a man down after Clark received a red card with five minutes remaining.
Despite the loss, HCHS battled throughout the evening behind strong defensive play and another impressive effort from Paulsen in goal, finishing the season with an 8-8-2 overall record.
Greene County advances to face Bishop Heelan Catholic next Wednesday night in Sioux City.
